Monks of Sindhupalchok – Finding Education Beyond the Monastery

High in the hills of Sindhupalchok, where the mountains rise quietly above scattered villages, many children are sent to monasteries at a very young age. For some families, it is a way to give their children shelter, discipline, and a spiritual path when life’s hardships make other opportunities difficult.

Two young boys from this region entered a monastery when they were only six years old. At an age when most children are just beginning to understand the world around them, they were already learning monastic life—waking before sunrise, memorizing prayers, and living far away from their families. The monastery became their home, and the monks around them became their family.

For nearly a decade, this was the only life they knew.

But when they turned fifteen, everything changed.

For personal and family reasons, the two boys had to leave the monastery. Suddenly, they found themselves standing outside the only world they had ever known. They had spent their childhood within monastery walls, learning prayers and rituals, but they had never experienced the regular education system or the realities of life beyond the monastic community.

The transition was painful and uncertain.

Without formal schooling, they struggled to see how they could continue their education or find a place in society. Their families had limited financial resources, and the path ahead seemed unclear. The boys carried deep feelings of confusion and loss—leaving behind the life they had grown up with while stepping into a world they were unprepared to face.

At this difficult moment in their lives, Amala Center Nepal stepped forward to support them.

Recognizing their situation, the organization provided the boys with educational opportunities and guidance to help them begin a new chapter. Amala Center Nepal helped arrange schooling, learning materials, and the emotional support needed to adapt to life outside the monastery.

For the first time, the boys sat in classrooms alongside other students, learning subjects that would open doors for their future. The adjustment was not easy. They had to work hard to catch up with lessons and adapt to a completely different environment. But with patience, encouragement, and the support of Amala Center Nepal, they slowly began to rebuild their confidence.

Education became their bridge to a new life.

What once felt like the end of their path became the beginning of something new. Through compassion and community support, these young former monks were given a chance to continue learning, grow as individuals, and find their place in the wider world.

Their journey is a powerful reminder that many young people face difficult transitions that are often invisible to others. Without support, they risk being left behind.

Amala Center Nepal remains committed to helping children and young people like them—those standing at uncertain crossroads—by offering education, guidance, and hope.

Because sometimes, all it takes to change a life is someone willing to walk beside you when the path ahead feels unknown.
